A "Green Safety Corridor" project was initiated in Chisinau, with the involvement of activist groups and NGOs. «Project Line SRL», carries out this project in collaboration with the Automobile Club of Moldova, Urban Platform, supported by Chisinau City Hall and the General Directorate of Public Transport and Communications. The project is funded by the UNDP Moldova within “Green City Lab” under the "Fast Track Challenge" program, GEF and co-funded by the Eastern Alliance for Safe and Sustainable Transport (EASST).
This initiative focuses on sustainable urban planning which consists of friendly solutions for the comfort and well-being of citizens and covers the subject of urban mobility. The key idea of the project is to join forces in a wider partnership to make the streets safer and to expand the ACM pilot project in association with the "Universal Access" ltd supported by the UNDP (Green City Lab) in 2019-2020.
"Green Safety Corridor" is a transformation of a selected area on Dacia bd. by improving safety for all road users, focusing on pedestrians, cyclists and people with disabilities, offering simple and accessible solutions.
Within the project, a conceptual plan was created for the street transformation and installing bicycle lanes, taking into account the intersections, pedestrian crossings and existing traffic along Dacia Boulevard. This project represents the infrastructure improvement without rebuilding it, applying simple and modern methods, according to the principles of tactical urbanism, which facilitates the movement and mobility of pedestrians, cyclists and drivers simultaneously along the street.
For several months, on-site visits, quantitative and qualitative analyses of street, car and pedestrian traffic, as well as the assessment of the existing infrastructure on the boulevard were carried out. During the scheme development of the selected street area, the existing real estate objectives were considered, such as parking spots, shopping centers, public transport stations, entrances and exits into and out of courtyards and intersections.
Following consultations with the Chisinau City Hall, the Working Group on Alternative Transport in Chisinau and other participants involved in the project, changes were made, according to the consultations and working meetings. It is important to note that this type of consultation was organized for the first time in the design phase of the infrastructure for alternative transport users. Public consultations will be organized in the near future, with the presentation of the concept of street transformation and the implementation plan of the “Green Safety Corridor” project.
The project will be concluded with a public survey conducting involving alternative transport users from Chisinau.
This initiative is a continuation of the pilot action on the street transforming into a safer one, developed in 2019-2020 by the “Universal Acces SRL”, Center for the Rights of Persons with Disabilities (CDPD), Automobile Club of Moldova and EASST within the Green City Lab Program of UNDP Moldova to facilitate improved road safety, transform roads and intersections to protect vulnerable road users, creating safer areas for pedestrians and people with disabilities and add more space for cyclists, encouraging safe driving. The project represents a pilot action of pedestrian crossing transformation at the intersection of Millo and Dacia bd., financed by the Safer Roads Foundation and EASST.
