“Road Safety Education Pack” for teachers and educators in Moldova

On 14 December 2018, the Automobile Club of Moldova (ACM) organized a launching event of the Road Safety Education Pack in Chisinau. Thus, the teachers of the “Ştefan cel Mare” and “Alexandru Ioan Cuza” Lyceums of Moldovan capital were trained on use of the EASST Educational Pack for teaching road safety to children in kindergartens and schools.

The Road Safety Educational Pack was developed by the Eastern European Alliance for Safe and Sustainable Transport (EASST) and translated and adapted by the ACM and ProtectMD Foundation. The given material is created as educative support for road safety teaching in various formal and non-formal educational activities for preschool and school education. Following several institutional and formal procedures, introduction of the Pack into the National Curriculum has been approved by the Ministry of Education, Culture and Research as didactic supporting guide for teachers and educators within the Personal Development Discipline.

Starting from January 2019, the Automobile Club of Moldova will conduct ToTs in over 50 educational institutions of Moldova to present the Education Pack and pilot road safety lessons.

The Pack provides the necessary resources for children and young people to acquire, in an age-appropriate manner, the basic methods for preventing road crashes.

The key principles underlying all the activities in the EASST Road Safety Education pack are:

  • Awareness of traffic and its dangers.
  • Good behaviour around roads.
  • Making safe choices to keep you and others safe.

The Education Pack on road safety includes a diverse range of activities including stories, art, drama, surveys, research projects, practical exercises, and group discussions. Every part of the Pack is based on the principle of active learning and student enquiry and has age appropriate content.

The Pack is divided into three age categories:

• Children under 6 years old;

• Children aged 6 to 11;

• Teenagers aged 12-14.

The international partners that contributed to the development of the Education Pack are:

Eastern European Alliance for Safe and Sustainable Transport (EASST), FIA Foundation, UK Department of Transport’s THINK Campaign, YOURS – Youth for road safety, BRAKE – the road safety charity. Automobile Club of Moldova brings sincere thanks to the Road Safety Ambassador of the Republic of Moldova Andrian Candu, the Ministry of Education, Culture and Research of the Republic of Moldova and National Patrolling Inspectorate for the support provided to introducing the Pack in the National Didactic&Curriculum System.

The launch and publication of the Road Safety Education Pack in the Republic of Moldova was funded by the British Embassy in Chisinau. The content of this publication is the sole responsibility of the author and does not necessarily reflect the views of the British Government.
