Every year, on the third Sunday of November, we mark the World Day of Remembrance for Road Traffic Victims – a day dedicated to remembering those lost in road accidents and a call to action for responsible authorities to reduce the number of these tragedies to 0. This day symbolizes both an awareness of road risks and our commitment to safety, especially for the most vulnerable road users: children, pedestrians, and cyclists. Automobil Club of Moldova, in collaboration with the National Inspectorate of Public Security, with support from FIA, FIA Foundation, and UNICEF Moldova, implemented a series of public awareness activities in Șoldănești, Edineț, and Ialoveni, designed to contribute to increasing road safety, awareness, and community education.
In Șoldănești, students and teachers from "Alexei Mateevici" and "Ștefan Cel Mare" high schools participated in a symbolic flashmob at a pedestrian crossing to draw attention and raise public awareness about traffic dangers. First-grade students had interactive lessons about road safety, and each high school received a new traffic light, educational packages, and reflective equipment for students to conduct prevention activities, thus helping them be more visible and safe on the road.
In Edineț, over 1,000 students from five high schools and one middle school participated in a symbolic flash-mob, forming the number 30, thus highlighting the importance of respecting speed limits of 30 km/h around their school. The number 30 suddenly transformed into 0, symbolizing the commitment of all communities to reach 0 road fatalities. Students also had interactive road safety lessons, being encouraged to understand the importance of following traffic rules and the need for responsible behavior.
In Ialoveni, students and teachers from "Petre Ștefănucă" Theoretical High School, together with the Automobil Club of Moldova team, Ialoveni City Hall, and expert Victor Chironda, transformed the area around the high school into an accessible and safe one for pedestrians. By applying tactical urbanism measures, the space near the school was reconfigured, eliminating parking spaces that limited visibility and endangered children's safety. This initiative demonstrated that essential changes for road safety can be achieved with minimal resources but with great desire and collaboration between the community and authorities.
These activities, organized with the support of FIA, FIA Foundation, and UNICEF Moldova, emphasize the importance of international partnerships for creating safer roads for all road users. The activities in these localities, whether they consisted of flashmobs, interactive lessons, or interventions, contribute to educating and raising awareness in the community and, especially, to protecting the vulnerable. Automobil Club of Moldova remains dedicated to this objective, continuing to support initiatives that lead to saving lives and creating a safe environment for all road users. A safe road means more lives saved!
