The World Day of Remembrance for Road Traffic Victims is observed annually on the third Sunday of November to honor the countless victims of road traffic crashes worldwide, as well as to support the families and friends of these victims and all those who have been affected by such incidents. On this day, we also recognize and express gratitude to emergency services for their courage and interventions in saving lives. Additionally, we reflect on the immense costs road crashes impose on communities and families and explore ways to prevent road traffic accidents.
Therefore, this special day has become an important tool for authorities, civil society, and communities to highlight the vast scale of the issue and the urgent need for action.
This year, we mark the beginning of a new Decade of Action for Road Safety 2021–2030 and the launch of a new Global Plan of Action for Road Safety. In this context, the World Day of Remembrance for Road Traffic Victims has played a crucial role, clearly emphasizing the reasons behind all the immediate actions needed in the coming period. The 2021 slogan is: "We no longer want victims to remember; we want to live our lives together!"
In this context, on November 18, a flash mob took place in front of the Government of the Republic of Moldova, in the Great National Assembly Square. The event aimed to raise public awareness about implementing a 30 km/h speed limit in high-risk areas for vulnerable road users (children, elderly individuals, pedestrians, cyclists, people with disabilities, etc.), addressing the issue of frequent road tragedies caused by excessive speed.
Students from "Ștefan cel Mare" High School in the capital formed the shape of the number 30, symbolizing their call to responsible authorities to establish and enforce a speed limit near educational institutions and areas where they spend their free time. They also appealed to drivers to slow down. The goal of the students, along with the Automobile Club of Moldova, was to demand the right to safe streets—streets for life!
The activities were organized by the Automobile Club of Moldova in partnership with the Ministry of Internal Affairs, with the support of the World Health Organization, the Eastern Alliance for Safe and Sustainable Transport (EASST), and the FIA Foundation.
