Education, Solidarity, and Action for Safer Roads: ACM Marks the 8th UN Global Road Safety Week 2025 with Activities for Pedestrians and Cyclists

Between May 12–17, 2025, the Automobile Club of Moldova (ACM) joined the 8th edition of the UN Global Road Safety Week, dedicated to promoting safety for pedestrians and cyclists. Under this year’s themes — "Make Walking Safe" and "Make Cycling Safe" — ACM organized a series of educational, symbolic, and interactive activities across various regions of the country. These actions brought together children, youth, teachers, local authorities, and police officers to raise awareness about visibility and the need for safe infrastructure.

In Telenești, children sent a strong message of solidarity: some on bicycles, others on foot, they came from different directions and joined together in a symbolic march representing vulnerable road users. The activity was organized with the support of the Telenești Police Inspectorate, the National Patrol Inspectorate (INSP), and the Ministry of Education and Research.

In Orhei, the ACM team met with young people at the Orhei Youth Center, where they organized a themed flash mob and an interactive discussion about essential traffic safety rules. The atmosphere was dynamic, and the campaign’s message was enthusiastically supported by the participants.

As part of the Road Safety Week, ACM also visited Lyceum Spiru Haret in Chișinău, where 5th and 6th-grade students took part in an interactive lesson on pedestrian safety. The children watched educational videos, learned how to cross the road safely, and participated in an outdoor demonstration led by the National Patrol Inspectorate (INSP). As in all the activities, students received reflective materials to increase their visibility in traffic.

On May 17, ACM also took part in the national road safety competition "The ABCs of Safe Roads", dedicated to lower secondary school students. The event was organized by the Republican Center for Children and Youth “Artico” and the Ministry of Education and Research. The activity featured several educational rounds, traffic-themed games, and challenges, with the best-performing participants awarded for their contribution to fostering safe behaviors from a young age.

Through these actions, the Automobile Club of Moldova reminds everyone that road safety is a shared responsibility and that education and the active involvement of authorities are essential to protect the lives of the most vulnerable road users and to ensure safe infrastructure for all forms of urban mobility. These activities were carried out with the support of the Ministry of Education and Research, the National Youth Agency, and the National Patrol Inspectorate (INSP).

During the same week, ACM experts presented the “Safe Streets, Streets for Life” Guide to local public authorities as a practical tool for promoting safe speeds in communities. The series of awareness sessions began with a training workshop for police officers. The guide for implementing low-speed zones was developed by the Automobile Club of Moldova with the support of EASST (Eastern Alliance for Safe and Sustainable Transport), aiming to encourage 30 km/h speed limits in areas where vulnerable road users interact with motorized traffic.
