15 November 2020 – World Day of Remembrance for Road Traffic Victims

The World Day of Remembrance for Road Traffic Victims takes place on the third Sunday of November each year.

It is a high-profile global event that reminds us of the millions of lives lost and seriously injured on the world’s roads and calls on us to recognize the suffering of all victims, their families, and communities – millions more added each year to the countless millions already affected: a truly staggering cumulative figure.

This day has also become an important tool for governments and for all those whose work involves preventing crashes or responding to their consequences. It provides an opportunity to show the enormous scale and impact of road traffic deaths and injuries, to call for an end to the often trivial and inadequate response to these tragedies, and to advocate for urgent, coordinated action to end the tragedy on our roads.

On this World Day, we also pay tribute to the dedicated emergency crews, police officers, and medical staff who deal every day with the traumatic consequences of road crashes.

According to statistical data provided by the Police, in the Republic of Moldova in 2019 there were 2,572 road traffic crashes, in which 274 people lost their lives and another 3,001 were injured.

On the World Day of Remembrance for Road Traffic Victims, the Automobile Club of Moldova expresses its tribute to all those who have lost their lives in road traffic crashes and extends its condolences to the families who carry this grief in their hearts for a lifetime.

History

The World Day has a long history:

Since 1995, road traffic victim organizations under the umbrella of the European Federation of Road Traffic Victims (FEVR) have marked this day together – initially as the European Day of Remembrance, and shortly after, with the inclusion of NGOs from Africa, South America, and Asia, as the World Day of Remembrance.

Ten years later, on 26 October 2005, the World Day was adopted by the UN General Assembly as a day for the “appropriate recognition of the victims of road traffic crashes and their families.”

Today, the World Day is observed on all continents, not only by NGOs advocating for road safety and road victims, but also by governments and all relevant stakeholders.
